I was born in 1987 in Portland, Oregon, where childhood often meant drizzle, muddy shoes and adults discussing coffee as though it were a moral issue. My father was an electrician, my mother ran a small flower shop, and my younger brother, Caleb, could dismantle almost anything but rarely put it back together.
